November ITL Standard Focus-Empowered Learner

This month the LTR posts will be focused on Empowering Learners. Since this is the first post of the month on it, this post will focus on what standards are included in this heading.

EL1-Students leverage digital tools and strategies to take an active role in choosing and achieving their learning goals. Supporting Standards include: EL1.a: Set goals and reflect. EL1.b: Build network to support learning. EL1.c: Create personalized learning environment. EL1.d: Seek and utilize feedback.

Some things to reflect on with this standard that many of us already do are:

  • Setting goals and reflecting is something that many of us already do our classrooms and with the district going 1:1 it just makes sense to start modeling and expecting students to utilize digital tools like SeeSaw, Google Docs, Classroom and Gmail to make, reflect upon and modify goals on a regular basis. Show them the benefits and drawbacks of each and let them have the choice on how they choose to reflect.
  • Personalized Learning Environments as we learned last spring is a way to engage students, by allowing them to explore in parameters students will be more engaged and thus will be able to delve deeper into making connections with your curriculum and the world around them.
  • Feedback is often given teacher to student, do you allow students to look for feedback from their peers or other professionals?

EL2 - Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations and demonstrate the ability to choose, use, and troubleshoot current technologies. Supporting Standard EL2.a: Understand and apply functions and operations.

This one is a tad bit trickier and may not directly relate to many curricular areas, but the foundations do. Do you guide students through troubleshooting their devices or projects? If something isn't going exactly as expected do we contact support right away? No, our minds are our first line of defense and looking at why or how something is behaving in a certain way is important.

Take a step back and go through the steps that you went through to get to the spot you are. Did you make a mistake? Maybe the website or file just needs to be rebooted.

EL3 - Students are able to transfer knowledge to explore emerging technologies. Supporting Standard EL3.a: Transfer knowledge to emerging technology.

Many of us already ask students to make connections with our curriculum. The same goes here, many technologies have the same base and students should be making connections with current technologies with those that they are exposed to as new.

Now that I have fully filled your brains with a bunch of OH, NO! I don't do this, or Psh, this doesn't relate to me. There are ways that it does. Please look for 3 more posts regarding Empowered Learners where I will pick each of these standards apart and give ideas of how they can be integrated or may already be integrated into your curriculum.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

As a child of the 80's and 90's I absolutely LOVED this game! I remember fighting my brother over who got to play this on our PC growing up. Checking out Almanacs from the library just so that I could try to solve the questions that were given. Watching the game show on PBS: Man, that song was really catchy! Then on one of our many snow/cold days Roland and I discovered that Netflix had released their own animated version to answer the question: Who really is Carmen Sandiego? Then, it just got better! If you saw the latest Google for Education Newsletter, XVIII, March 2019 you may have seen what I saw: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Google have created an interactive quiz that takes your students across the globe to find clues and solve the mystery of the Crown Jewels caper:  Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?   Melding the world of Google Earth and the classic game we remember (it's even pixelated like we remember!) Students get to interview different peopl...

Youtube Chanel to Follow: Epic Reads!

I follow a lot of different forms of media in blogs, social media, and YouTube. This post is about a super valuable YouTube Channel called Epic Reads ! Now, I know that it is not a technology post, however I am using Technology to keep up to date with current book trends and this is one of those ways! I like it because it talks about adult book and teen book trends and the vlogger (video blogger) is not too annoying, I can handle her talking, in fact if I was in a classroom I would use the December 2017 Book Haul (at around the 1:30 mark) to talk about trigger books and how books can have themes that really grip the reader. Some other channels that I follow are: Google for Education -I have spammed you before about this one, however I feel like highlighting again the EDU in 90 sessions. They only take about a minute and a half of your time to look at features of the G Suite! Origin of Everything -This is a relatively new one. It is PBS branching out into YouTube land. They...

Guest Post-Tara Runaas with IXL and its use in your classroom

Many teachers a re using IXL in their classrooms, however, what are you doing with the results of what your students are doing?  Did you know that there is a way to drill down and see what your students level is within each domain? Did you know that you can look on your account to see what your students are working on at the moment?  Do you know what the Smartscore really is? Do you know that you can ability group your students and assign certain skills? If this intrigues you, please reach out to me as I’m very willing to share this information with you.  Below is an outline of a meeting I held at the elementary level. I would love to come visit and show you what this program can really do! Continuous Diagnostic What is it? What does it do? How do the students get there? Choose ELA/Math or both What to do with the information when you have it. Real-time Analytics Shows who is logged in Shows if they are actively learning Shows what sk...
