FREE teacher resource-PBS Learning Media

PBS has a bunch of free teaching resources that includes lesson plans, videos, activities and more! Best of all, it's all FREE!

The link to find it is here: https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/

If you have never been there before you do need to create your own account. I strongly suggest using your Google Account.

When you first log in you have a few different options just from the top. You can search by:

  • Subject
  • Grade
  • Standard

There are predetermined collections based on show and topic.

Each video comes with a brief description, support materials and standards that it is related to.

When you choose an item, you can assign it within the PBS Learning Media website or you can share it directly to Google Classroom. I really appreciate both of these features. Google Classroom is a no brainer most of the time because that is what I use to share materials with students.

However, PBS Learning Media allows you to use some other features as well:

  • The Lesson Builder allows you to combine videos, images and documents from PBS LearningMedia with an interactive quiz, and share it with your students using a URL or Assignment Code.
  • Storyboards are a way to illustrate a concept or topic through a collection of videos, text and images. Just save your storyboard to access a URL to share with your class.
  • Quiz Maker allows you to build quizzes based on the content in your lesson.
  • Puzzle Maker allows you bolster vocabulary knowledge with a word search or crossword puzzle activity.
Students can access their lessons with codes. There are great tutorial videos included in this website to help you navigate as well.

Digital Citizenship-Who are you online?

Standard 1 for Digital Citizenship states that " Students recognize the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living, learning, and working in an interconnected digital world." I think that in order for students to recognize this that staff also need to recognize the impact of a Digital Footprint. One resource that I stumbled upon a few years ago was "What Happens in Vegas Stays on Youtube" by Erik Qualman and the more student version of "What Happens on Campus Stays on Youtube." Think of these books as a What if... Chicken Soup for the Digital Soul, where the author shares real life stories of how digital footprints have impacted both adults and students and gives ways to create a positive footprint. Let's face it, we can't not have a digital footprint, unless you are totally disconnected, so we, staff and students, need to focus on making sure what others can see of us online is what we want them to see. Ways you can check what...
