2018-19 Electronic Library Resources

Routines have been established and you are all working hard at engaging your students. While YouTube, Google and Wikipedia have some great resources this post is to talk about the different resources and subscriptions that we have here at Pardeeville Area School District and where to locate them. This post is to give a brief overview and reminder of how to access them.

Access-both of the Library Technology Resource pages are linked to each other (from the bottom) for ease of transitioning between the two.

All of the following resources can be found in the Researcher or Listener Tab of these websites.

General Knowledge (in alphabetical order)

  • AbdoZoom- Intended for early elementary learners this has numerous databases with content, activities and games. Access-use the library links as the username and password are embedded into the link. (ES-R)
  • Book Flix- Intended for elementary and middle school use. Book Flix pairs nonfiction with fiction text. Books are either animated or in eBook form. There are numerous activities including a quiz and vocabulary. Access-this is IP validated at school. If promoting home use please contact me for the username/password as this can't be shared publicly. (ES-R)
  • BrainPop Jr.-Intended for early elementary learners, there are numerous categories that include a video featuring the same cast of characters. Along with a video are are other engaging activities and a quiz (easy or hard) where students can test their knowledge. Access-use the library links as the username and password are embedded into the link. (ES-R)
  • BrainPop-Intended for upper elementary and middle school, I think even high schoolers would find some of the information engaging. Just like BrainPop Jr. there are videos centered around the same characters, BrainPop will allow students to send you an email report of their quiz responses. Access-use the library links as the username and password are embedded into the link. (ES-R; MHS-R)
  • Discoverer by ProQuest-This resource is intended for an elementary and middle school aged student. Access to articles, videos, images and other resources for multiple disciplines. Just like Gale, students and staff can link their GSuite accounts for ease of use. Account-this is an IP authenticated resource, if you need a username and password for access outside of school please let me know. It can't be publicly shared but can be shared within your Google Classroom. (MHS-R)
  • Flocabulary-This is a K-12 resource. It is proven that some students learn better when the content is to music. Flocabulary does this for you. There are original songs based on different content areas, within each unit there are vocabulary, quiz and other activities. My favorites are the Week in Rap (both original and Jr) as they keep students up to date with the different events that are happening around the world in less than 5 minutes. Access-you will use your GSuite account for this. To set up teacher account (if you haven't done so) please let me know and I will share out that link again. I tend to send it out at the beginning of the school year. You can assign topics/videos through Google Classroom too! (ES-L; MHS-R and L)
  • PebbleGo-This is an early elementary database. We subscribe to all available databases. Information is broken into smaller chunks for easier comprehension. Citations are available for acceptable digital citizenship. Access-use the library links as the username and password are embedded into the link. (ES-L)
  • PebbleGo Next-This is the older sibling to PebbleGo. This is intended for upper elementary and middle school. Articles are laid out in a more mature theme but the same features are there. Access-use the library links as the username and password are embedded into the link. (ES-L; MHS-L)
  • Research in Context by Gale-This is a newer resource intended for upper elementary and middle school. If students have a topic they are able to have a one stop shop of different information, images and articles. This integrates well with GSuite tools such as Docs and Classroom. Access-this is an IP authenticated resource, if you need a username and password for access outside of school please let me know. It can't be publicly shared but can be shared within your Google Classroom. (MHS-L)

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

As a child of the 80's and 90's I absolutely LOVED this game! I remember fighting my brother over who got to play this on our PC growing up. Checking out Almanacs from the library just so that I could try to solve the questions that were given. Watching the game show on PBS: Man, that song was really catchy! Then on one of our many snow/cold days Roland and I discovered that Netflix had released their own animated version to answer the question: Who really is Carmen Sandiego? Then, it just got better! If you saw the latest Google for Education Newsletter, XVIII, March 2019 you may have seen what I saw: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Google have created an interactive quiz that takes your students across the globe to find clues and solve the mystery of the Crown Jewels caper:  Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?   Melding the world of Google Earth and the classic game we remember (it's even pixelated like we remember!) Students get to interview different peopl...

Youtube Chanel to Follow: Epic Reads!

I follow a lot of different forms of media in blogs, social media, and YouTube. This post is about a super valuable YouTube Channel called Epic Reads ! Now, I know that it is not a technology post, however I am using Technology to keep up to date with current book trends and this is one of those ways! I like it because it talks about adult book and teen book trends and the vlogger (video blogger) is not too annoying, I can handle her talking, in fact if I was in a classroom I would use the December 2017 Book Haul (at around the 1:30 mark) to talk about trigger books and how books can have themes that really grip the reader. Some other channels that I follow are: Google for Education -I have spammed you before about this one, however I feel like highlighting again the EDU in 90 sessions. They only take about a minute and a half of your time to look at features of the G Suite! Origin of Everything -This is a relatively new one. It is PBS branching out into YouTube land. They...
